Expedición Ares: Descubrimiento añade nuevas mecánicas de cartas al popular Terraforming Mars: Expedición Ares. A los amantes del Terraforming Mars original les encantará el regreso de las recompensas e hitos, con un nuevo giro que no hace sino mejorar la rejugabilidad. Además, algunas cartas de proyecto te darán la oportunidad de reemplazar una de tus cartas de fase con una versión nueva y mejorada que aumenta la bonificación que obtienes cuando eliges esa fase. Mejorar una carta de fase puede revolucionar tu estrategia, pero también puede cambiar la forma en que tus oponentes predicen tu juego. Asimismo, cada carta de fase tiene dos opciones de mejora divergentes para adaptar tu mazo de fase a la estrategia concreta de tu motor.
